About Hannah & Nick
Hi! Weโre Hannah & Nick, two Dutch creatives who swapped the 9-to-5 life for a life of adventure.
Salt in our Hair began in 2016, just before our very first big trip together: a four-month backpacking adventure through Southeast Asia. With little money, no clear plan, and a GoPro camera Nick had won online at an auction for โฌ11 (yes, really!), we started posting photos taken with that camera on Instagram simply to keep friends and family updated.
The name? It came to us on a drive home from the beach in the Netherlands, with, you guessed it, salt in our hair. ๐
From hobby to our full-time job
What started as a fun side project quickly grew bigger. One day, GoPro shared one of our photos, and overnight we went from hundreds of followers to thousands. Suddenly, people we didnโt even know were asking for travel tips, so instead of repeating ourselves, we launched a blog where we could share guides and itineraries.
At the time, Nick worked as a web developer and Hannah as a graphic designer. Photography wasnโt our profession, but we taught ourselves along the way. For two years, we juggled full-time jobs while using every free moment to travel and build Salt in our Hair.
By October 2017, we took the leap: we quit our jobs and went all in. What had started with an โฌ11 GoPro had turned into a dream career.
Growing with passion
The truth? For the first three years, we earned almost nothing. And thatโs exactly why it worked: Salt in our Hair was born out of pure passion, not as a business idea. We absolutely love creating guides, editing photos, and sharing personal stories.
Our passion is still at the core of everything we do today. Itโs why we sometimes turn down big collaborations that donโt feel authentic. For us, itโs about inspiring our community and staying true to what we love โ not just saying yes for the sake of money.
How we travel
Weโve always been slow travelers. While others rush through a destination in a week, weโd rather take three. It allows us to really experience a place, connect with people, and create guides that feel like advice from a friend, not just a checklist.
The destinations that inspire us most are those with a little bit of everything: nature, culture, small villages, local food, and even a hidden hip cafรฉ or two. That mix is what makes a place come alive for us.
Behind the scenes
It hasnโt always been easy. In 2019, after years of constant travel, Nick was in a burnout. Since then, weโve learned to balance adventure with rest: shorter trips, building in breaks, and keeping a home base. Balance is now just as important to us as discovery.
Nick is usually behind the lens, while Hannah brings the photos to life with her editing and design eye. Together we create videos and guides, but over time Salt in our Hair has grown into a team of amazing people from all over the world who help us with emails, organization, writing, and managing projects โ while keeping the heart of our content personal and creative.
Sharing what weโve learned
In 2025, we launched Salty Academy: our online platform where we teach others how to start a blog, grow an audience, and turn creativity into income. Seeing our students go from first posts to building their own businesses is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Looking ahead
Salt in our Hair has taken us to over 60 countries, connected us with inspiring people, and turned our biggest passion into our full-time work.
In the future, we dream of continuing to inspire travelers, maybe even curating our own trips with local partners. And one day, weโd love to share these adventures with a family of our own.
For now, weโre simply grateful that youโre here. We hope our guides, photos, and stories inspire you to travel more meaningfully, and with a little more salt in your hair.
